Adirondack Rockware

Ceramic artist Peter Shrope lives in the northern Adirondack Mountains near Rainbow Lake. His involvement in ceramics covers over 35 years and from his very early years he has been intrigued with thinking locally and using available resources in the creation of his work. He built a two chambered woodfired kiln in New Hampshire in the 1970s in an area that had seven sawmills and plenty of waste slabwood that could be used as fuel for his kiln. While he lived in Baltimore, Maryland in the 1990s he dug and processed clay from his backyard and used it for his signature Baltimore Redware series. Many of these pieces were recognized in national and regional exhibitions.

Now in the Adirondack Park, Peter uses 100 percent pure crushed Adirondack rock in his original Adirondack Rockware glazed pottery. He researched the geology of the region, tested materials and created these unique glazes in response to the area that surrounds him. His glaze formulas are original and are his unique contribution to the renowned ceramic tradition of the Adirondack region in northern New York. The high temperature stoneware clay and custom formulated glazes are fired to temperatures between 2200 and 2500 degrees in a kiln at his Rainbow Lake studio. All his work is dishwasher and microwave safe.
