Honest Injun' Baskets
Yvonne Phillips of Honest Injun' Baskets is a fourth generation Native American basket weaver. Her family, Abenaki Indians originally from an area near the Canadian border, was a prime source of Adirondack-style packbaskets nationwide (including the Alaskan fishing industry). Yvonne learned the art from her grandfather (Ernest Phillips), father (Ernest "Putt" Phillips), and grandmother (Peggy Phillips) around the woodstove in their cabin. Products by Honest Injun' BasketsHonest Injun' Baskets are made from hand-felled Adirondack ash. The bark of the log is stripped using a draw knife. The log is then pounded with a large hammer to soften the wood. Using an axe and chisel, the strips are pulled from the log, then trimmed with a knife and soaked in water. The basket is then woven by hand with repeated soaking and tightening. Click Images to View Details
