Tourism is one of the leading economic activities in the Adirondack Park and yet little research, planning or public policy has addressed its condition and development. While millions of dollars have been spent on advertising and promotion, little funding has been allocated to evaluating current tourism programs or to tourism planning, especially at the local level. This report provides an in-depth look at Adirondack tourism opportunities from the perspective of 258 business owners in sixteen communities in the central and western Adirondack Park. It also incorporates the views of 65 participants in seven community tourism focus group meetings organized by the researchers in Old Forge, Inlet, Cranberry Lake, Tupper Lake, North Creek, Indian Lake, and Speculator. The findings reveal a different set of priorities than those often espoused by regional tourism leaders representing the more developed areas of the Adirondack Park, with the needs and interests of business operators in the central and western Adirondack Park differing from those who are located in or around Lake Placid and Lake George.
