Ben Rae

Ben Rae has been a woodworker for over twenty years. About five years ago, he began doing Intarsia, which is similar to inlay work but three-dimensional rather than flat. Ben is inspired by the natural beauty of the Lake George region of the Adirondacks and by a love of the warmth and color of various natural woods.

Each Intarsia wall hanging is about 1" thick and all wood colors are natural - no stains are used. Individual pieces of wood such as cherry, maple, black walnut, poplar, aspen, cedar, and some exotic woods are cut, sanded to create contouring, and glued together to form the image, which is then glued to a backing with a picture hanger. Lastly, each piece is finished and protected with several coats of polythurane. Each piece is unique due to natural variations in wood grains and colors.
